Nursing is a discipline in transition. As the complexity and acuity of patients increase, nurses are taking on a more comprehensive role in health care leadership and patient outcomes. As the discipline has evolved so has the curricular framework of nursing educational programs, moving from being based on a specific nursing theory, to a general metaparadigm, to the current focus on meeting curricular content standards developed by national accrediting agencies. When considering the skills needed to fully engage in critical thinking and patient advocacy there may be room for an additional curricular focus: that of metacognitive development based on critical theory and constructivism. The empowerment of students via metacognitive and self-evaluative practices also supports the critical theory pedagogy.

Critical Thinking: From Theory to Teaching
Critical theory is a social theory oriented toward critiquing and changing society as a whole. It differs from traditional theory, which focuses only on understanding or explaining society. Critical theory as it is known today can be traced to Marx's critiques of the economy and society. It is inspired greatly by Marx's theoretical formulation of the relationship between economic base and ideological superstructure and focuses on how power and domination operate. The contemporary politics and economic structures of the time greatly influenced their thought and writing, as they lived during the height of national socialism.
Critical Thinking Skills
Critical thinking skill is exemplified by asking questions about alternative possibilities in order to reliably achieve some objective. Asking and answering questions is a skill of dialogue. Alternative possibilities are represented by mental models. A process of questioning mental models is or should be adopted because of its reliability for achieving the purposes of the participants within the available time.

Even so, to think critically requires more than just being critical; it requires skills and aptitude for applying the skills in practice. In addition, to become an advanced thinker, the skills need to be practiced, and for that classroom offers a natural venue. They can be consciously employed to practice critical thinking.
