Finnegans Wake is a book by Irish writer James Joyce. It has been called "a work of fiction which combines a body of fables The entire book is written in a largely idiosyncratic language , which blends standard English lexical items and neologistic multilingual puns and portmanteau words to unique effect. Many critics believe the technique was Joyce's attempt to recreate the experience of sleep and dreams,  because of the way concepts, people and places become amalgamated in dream consciousness. Thus, the Wake is a remarkable crystallization of many of Joyce's aesthetic ideas, pushed to a new level: the allusivity of Ulysses reaches new heights in the work, with every word being a multivalent symbolic cultural reference. The intricately detailed coherence between all elements of a literary work in Ulysses , or as Joyce said, that "every syllable can be justified", comes further in that every word is intensively designed; the combination of bawdy humor, linguistic wittiness and intense rushes of pastoral pathos; and verbosity.

Quotations need to be introduced appropriately using a signal phrase or sentence rather than being "dropped" into the paragraph with no context. A dropped quotation is a quotation inserted into the text without a signal phrase. Note how the quotation in this example is "dropped" into the paragraph so that the reader is unsure who is speaking.
